As a progressive union fighting for the advancement of working-class people of all backgrounds, Association Employees Union (AEU) stands in solidarity with the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community.
AAPI communities across the United States have experienced discrimination, unfair treatment, and violence. We acknowledge the history. The 1871 mass lynchings through the Chinese Massacre in Los Angeles. The 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act that stopped people of Asian descent from entering the US. Then, in the 1940s, the imprisonment of Japanese American citizens in internment camps. In 2021, the murder of eight women in Georgia, six of whom were of Asian descent, brings us to our feet that we must declare an end to this injustice.
Today, bias, microaggressions, and attacks continue, so we must use our platform to speak up.
We are incredibly saddened by the increase of unprovoked violence perpetrated on AAPI peoples across the country. Despite that overall reported hate crimes decreased last year, the reported hate crimes against the AAPI community rose by almost 150% in 16 major cities across the US. Some of those cities are right here, in our home state of California.
AEU is committed to fighting racial injustice. We stand with the AAPI community and speak out against the unfair treatment they experience.
