IAM Reaches Tentative Agreement with Caterpillar; Local Opposes Deal
The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) District 8 announced on August 15 that a tentative agreement with Caterpillar had been reached. The deal – negotiated at the district level -- is being opposed by local leaders, because they say it contains nearly all concessions Caterpillar had sought.

Progress Reported in Verizon-CWA-IBEW Labor Talks, Key Issues Remain
“Progress continues to be made” in the Verizon-CWA-IBEW labor talks, reported Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service (FMCS) Director George H. Cohen on August 15 after three weeks of intensive negotiations. However, Cohen added, “a number of core issues remain to be resolved.” No details were being released as the talks continued.

Construction Projects Fraught with Problems after VA Rejects Project Labor Agreements
After rejecting the use of Project Labor Agreements (PLAs) for its ambitious plans to construct several new hospital facilities across the United States, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs is now experiencing critical cost-overruns, massive scheduling delays, expensive quality issues, and accusations concerning the use of undocumented workers on projects being funded with taxpayer dollars, according to the Building and Construction Trades Department (BCTD).

Workers representing four links in Walmart’s global supply chain – food production, processing, warehousing and retail – filed a formal ethics complaint August 9 with Walmart’s corporate executives in Los Angeles. The complaint outlines systemic violations of Walmart’s own Statement of Ethics and Standards for Suppliers.
